A Major Portion

"On the way to get away from where you are, you can run as fast that you miss the blessing long the way. By the time you realize that you have missed them, a major portion of your life has taken place without you".
The above statement was written by Iyanla Vanzant in her book titled Peace from Broken Pieces. When I read this book in 2012, I did not get the full meaning of her statement. However, eight years later. I finally got it. You see I have been going through my life trying to make something happen really big. It would change how others see me; how much attention I would get; and how people would judge me. I made decisions that were based on others not my ability but my acceptance in society.
We as people love to be acknowledged but in search of that acknowledgment can cause us to miss the important things of life. Such as the sun rising, sun setting, kid's events, family, etc. We miss the important things and events because our focus is on pleasing others and moving ahead. We have been conditioned that success is the high paying job, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a backyard a dog or cat, and 2 cars in the driveway, this is just the storybook of success.
I read that book as well, so my whole adult life has been driven to make that storybook come true. However, my journey caused me to have a life of struggles, making poor decisions and living in apartments most of my life (the time I was not living in an apartment, I was living in someones else house with the 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a backyard, and a 2 car garage); I never reached that storybook goal on my own.
I now understand how to take my time and make a decision based on prayer and mediation. I take the time to see the sunrise and sunset, and family events. My focus is not on what others think or believe about me, it is on doing the will of God.
