Self- Care

What does self-care mean to you? Self-care means something different for each person. When I think of self-care, It is about taking time out for myself and doing things that give me peace and pleasure. I researched Self-care, and the two definitions are Self-care- the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s health or any activity that we do deliberately to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. I learned that investing in many areas of your life is a way to take care of yourself.


As parents, we tend to take care of others before we take care of ourselves, which leads to us feeling tired, exhausted, and unappreciated. I know for me becoming a mother at an early age; It was my decision to make her my priority. Therefore, I made choices based on her, not me. As my life change, a husband and three more daughters, they become the center of my world. After my divorce, I was now totally responsible for making decisions, where to live, what type of job, and all things that had to do with raising my four daughters. I made decisions based on what was best for my children, not myself. I later realized that making decisions for me was best for my daughters. The change in my perspective gave me an understanding and an appreciation of myself.


Self-care is essential to how you handle life stressful situations. Below is a list of my top five ways to take care of myself:

  1. Pray and meditation- I do both together. Pray is my time to spend with my God, and meditation allows me to get focus.

  2. I try to eat healthier- change what I eat and drink more water.

  3. Learn to say no and not try to do everything.

  4. Read more- fiction or non- fiction

  5. Take a road trip- a road trip gives me clarity and an appreciation for God’s creation.

There are other self-care practices that you can do to help you love yourself more, and that will allow you to give your best to your family, career, education, and others.


Self-care is not optional; it is a must.
